FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I don’t have much experience, where do I start?

Welcome! A fantastic starting point for your musical improv journey is our Musical Fun Times class. This course provides a friendly and essential introduction to the fundamentals of musical improv, while also building a solid foundation in basic improv comedy and stage presence. Whether you’re interested in exploring short-form games or diving into long-form narratives, this class will equip you with the foundational skills you need.

Musical Improv Level 1 serves as the first step in developing the skills necessary to create long-form musical improv sets. This means crafting extended narratives or multiple musicals that transition between scenes and songs. Even if your aspirations don’t lie in long-form improvisation, this level offers invaluable content and practice applicable to any musical improv practice, ensuring shared language and structural understanding among fellow performers. If you’re feeling confident and eager to dive into musical improv, Level 1 is an excellent starting point. However, if you’d like a bit more practice to build comfort with creating music and improv, then Musical Fun Times would be your best bet.

Our class, Do a Ditty, is a short-form musical improv class. In it, we engage in various short improv games and songs, all culminating in a lively musical improv variety show. This class is open to everyone; however, prior improv or musical improv experience is recommended.

We also offer single-day specialized focus workshops open to any level such as: One-Hit Wonder, Just Sing, Rhyme Time.

We frequently host Open Jams, which provide a wonderful and accessible, no-obligation way for anyone to come check it out and get a taste of the fun!Despite prior experience in related fields, Musical Improv Level 1 is the required entry point for our long-form program. This foundational level, with its specifically designed curriculum, ensures a common training, building a shared language and understanding, essential for our ensembles’ collaborative approach.

I have a lot of experience, where do I start?

Despite prior experience in related fields, Musical Improv Level 1 is the required entry point for our long-form program. This foundational level, with its specifically designed curriculum, ensures a common training, building a shared language and understanding, essential for our ensembles’ collaborative approach.

I don’t think I have a good voice, is Musical Improv still accessible to me?

Absolutely! You don’t need a ‘good voice’ for musical improv. If you enjoy singing and have a sense of rhythm, come give it a try! It’s more about comedic improv with music than professional singing. While singing and musical theatre abilities can enhance it, the core skills are hearing musical cues, rhythm, and improv abilities. Think fun, heightened comedy, not necessarily perfect vocals.

Our Just Sing! one-day workshop provides specialized practice and training specifically for improvised singing.

I’m interested in signing up for a class, but I anticipate having some absences. Will that be an issue?

Consistent attendance is essential for our classes’ progressive learning structure. Life happens, and if you miss a class, connecting with classmates to catch up is a great idea. We also usually start each session with a review of the main points from the last class. If you foresee an absence, please communicate it if you can. For any questions about this, feel free to contact us.

Missing more than two sessions will require repeating the level before progressing to another one due to the impact on your understanding and group collaboration. If you anticipate more than two absences, we recommend enrolling in a future term with better availability to ensure a positive experience for all.

Our goal is for students to continue their training. Please consider that taking a spot with a known number of upcoming absences, impacts the cohort’s sustainability and prevents another student who could progress with the group from joining.

What are different Musical Improv tracks offered?

We have two main tracks: Short Form and Long Form.

Short Form Track: These classes focus on games and shorter scenes with songs:

  • “Musical Fun Times”
  • “Do a Ditty”
  • “One-Hit Wonder”
  • “Scenes n’ Songs” (Prerequisite Level 2)
  • Option: Conservatory (Prerequisite Level 5, group decides format)

Long Form Track (Level 1-5, Conservatory): This track focuses on developing the skills to create longer improvised musical narratives, essentially mini-musicals with a through storyline and character development. This is where you’ll learn to build full improvised musical theater pieces.

I’d love to sign up for some classes, but I can’t make a long term commitment right now. Are there any possibilities?

We are offering short-term classes, some for only one day! Take a look at what might be offered in the near future or feel free to send us a message to inquire more.

What is the “Level” system and what is required to proceed to the next level?

Our “Level” system in the long-form program is designed to equip you with the tools you need to build strong musical improv abilities, step by step. To move to the next level, we look for you to show that you understand and can use the techniques we’ve explored. Since musical improv is a collaborative art form, progressing also involves being a supportive team member, respecting our learning spaces, and being open to feedback. Ultimately, advancement is about demonstrating your readiness to take on new challenges with confidence, ensuring we can all grow together as an ensemble.

I was asked to repeat a level before proceeding to the next. Did I fail?

We’re all about supporting your learning journey, and that means recognizing that everyone progresses differently. Repeating a level is simply an opportunity to build an even stronger foundation, to be performed with more consistency, confidence, and ensuring you are absolutely prepared and excited for what comes next. It’s about growing at your own comfortable rhythm! This readiness steadiness is vital because in our collaborative creative process, when each member feels secure in their skills, our collective potential as an ensemble truly blossoms.

I took musical improv classes in the past and would like to get back into it. Where’s a good place to start?

Welcome back to the world of musical improv! To best figure out where you should jump back in, it would be best if you would reach out to us directly. This will help us provide personalized advice and consider any curriculum updates with your comfort level.

We have refresher options, and repeating a level costs only half price – a great way to get back in the groove.

We also have one day focused workshops to help get you tuned up and ready, such as: Know The Drill, Rhyme Time, Songs n’ Scenes…

Can I take musical improv classes for fun without having to perform in front of an audience?

Yes, you absolutely can! We believe musical improv is fantastic on its own, and we happily offer classes where the focus is on exploration and enjoyment, not performance. Check out “Just Sing!,” “Rhyme Time,” “Scenes n’ Songs,” “Musical Fun Times,” and Level 1, or one of our “Open Jams” – none of these include a final public performance.

How do I get stage time?

Want more time to shine? Great! Many of our classes, like Level 2 through Conservatory, “Do a Ditty,” and “One Hit Wonder,” culminate in public performances. Plus, keep an ear out for invitations to new musical improv projects – and feel empowered to create your own! If you’re thinking of producing a show, tap into the wealth of knowledge around you. Many classmates and all our musical improv teachers have experience with this and are happy to help. Starting your own show involves securing a venue, gathering your cast and musicians, and then spreading the word to your audience.

I registered for a class but something has come up and I can no longer attend. Can I get a refund on my registration fee?

We’re sorry to hear that you can no longer attend your registered class. We appreciate that life can sometimes throw curveballs. However, upon registration, you secure a limited space in the class. Therefore, we are unable to offer refunds unless your spot can be filled by another eligible student, either from our waitlist or someone you find. This policy ensures the viability of our classes, as last-minute cancellations can impact our ability to run them effectively and prevent other interested students from joining. The logistical organization and reservations involved in running our classes incur costs and time investments.

What accounts for the difference in cost between musical and non-musical improv classes in Montreal?

Musical improv classes generally have higher fees due to the need for at least two specialized instructors (teaching and musical direction) who have advanced skills and extensive training beyond straight improv.

Where are the classes and shows located?

We host our classes and shows at some cool spots around Montréal, mainly in the Plateau! You’ll often find classes at places like The Wiggle Room, Mainline, and House of Actors, and our shows are frequently at the Wiggle Room, Mainline, Théâtre Sainte-Catherine, and Le Petit Café Campus. Just a heads-up, Musical Improv Montréal isn’t directly connected to these venues – we just rent the space.

Can my child sign up for these classes?

Our current classes are for adults (18+). We hope to offer youth programs down the line! In the meantime, please contact us if you’d like to inquire about private classes for young people.
